“It Takes More
Than Balls is a unique and fun book that lends a whole new
perspective on our national pastime. Congratulations to Deidre and
Jackie for presenting the game in such a wonderful and informative way.
This book is a great tool and a good read for all baseball fans of any
age.”

HEAD
COLDS MAKE DEIDRE LASH OUT AND GET A WEE BIT
IRRATIONAL.
deidre@, Tuesday, 12/9/08, 8:18 AM PST
Jackie is in Mexico
and left me here to keep things under control
until she finds it within her whim to return to
the office. Things are pretty normal. I’ve
stacked all the mail and bills on her desk.
I’ve spilled tomato soup on our new carpet.
There are leftover nachos on the window sill.
I’ve set fire to her computer. That last one
isn’t my normal behavior (though not out of the
realm of possibilities) but she should still
consider it a favor. Jackie needed a new
computer. And the little office bonfire made me
feel empowered. Merry Christmas, Jackie. Hope
you enjoyed f*&$#%g Mexico.
Other than my abandonment issues, things are
moving along swimmingly. We have many irons in
many fires and our next Savvy Steps will be
decided within a couple weeks. We'll be
back on the east coast in mid January for the
inauguration and are scheduling a few more
meetings in NYC for later that week. It's all
very interesting and, well, it's simply fun.
The Seattle rain and my ensuing head cold make
me long for last summer’s book tour, tank tops,
mojitos on South Beach and baseball games that
meander into the wee hours. I try to hang my hat
on anticipation over spring training but the
excitement has yet to start brewing. Maybe my
emotions and good cheer have been hijacked by
the holidays?
And it's not like spring training has the same
luster this year. Teams are moving around --
namely the Dodogers to a new complex in
Glendale, AZ and possibly the Orioles to the now
vacated Dodgertown in Vero Beach, FL. As
an Os fan, I'm all for this move. The
team's
Ft. Lauderdale site was a dump, though it is
nearer the more populated and customary Snowbird
hangouts. So travel habits will have to change.
But for all of you Orioles fans griping about
having schlep up to Vero Beach, just think of
how the Brooklyn Dodger fans have been
inconvenienced. They have to actually grapple
with the fact that the team left town about 50
years ago. With all that happening, there is
also the upcoming World Baseball Classic, which
makes spring training go a week longer.
And there's the recession, which has put the kebunk on exciting
development plans at some spring training sites and
made tourists evaluate their springtime travel
schedules. I now know of four spring training
"regulars" who have put their March exodus plans
on hold.
Well, at least they aren't
abandoning me... Ahem, Jackie?
